Why a Screed Pump Is Needed
Liquid screed is exactly that — liquid. It leaves the mixer at a consistency far closer to thick cream than to a traditional sand-and-cement screed, and that is precisely what lets it find its own level and flow tight around underfloor heating pipes. It is also what makes it impossible to move by hand: it cannot be barrowed, it cannot be shovelled, and it would simply slop out of anything you tried to carry it in.
That is why the pump isn’t optional on a liquid screed job. It draws the screed straight out of the mixer at the roadside and pushes it through a hose into the building — up stairs, along hallways and through doorways — discharging it exactly where it is wanted. Without a pump there is no practical way of getting the material from the truck to the floor at all.
It also means access is rarely the problem people expect it to be. The mixer stays out on the road and we run hose in to the room, so a narrow drive or a first-floor pour is no obstacle.
How it works on the day: the screed is discharged from the mixer straight into the grid-topped hopper at the front of the pump. From there it is forced out through the outlet pipe underneath and away down the pipeline — as much hose as the job needs, in through a door or a window and on to the room being poured — where it discharges onto the floor and is levelled off.

It’s then pumped from our rig at the roadside straight into the property and placed to the tripod levels you can see in the video, giving a fast, dead-flat and highly accurate floor finish that’s ready for tiling, wood or any final covering.

Liquid screed is a self-leveling floor product that is made up of sand, cement, and water. Liquid screed’s main purpose is to create a smooth finish and level surface when poured onto a subfloor or concrete floor. Liquid screed is also an ideal use for underfloor heating due to enhanced thermal insulation because of the heat transmitting from the underfloor heating pipes to the surface.
Liquid screed is installed via a screed pump and dappled off with a dapple bar for a smooth liquid consistency and easy finish. On the other hand, traditional methods such as traditional sand or cement screed, can be pumped in but it is a slow process to install since it is dry and needs placing and leveling by hand. Labour costs are also high for cement-based screed and over a long duration is bad for the installer’s health.
Liquid screed has a fast drying time of 24-48 hours for it to cure enough to endure light foot traffic and slight heating can be commissioned after 7 days.
All projects are suitable for liquid screed. As long as the subfloor is watertight no product can escape since it has the same properties as water where it will just run through any gap it can find. This is done by laying a polythene membrane on your floor prior to laying the underfloor heating pipes.
The first preparation requirement before applying liquid screed is preparing a solid base and level subfloor. Next, the insulation must be laid down so the heat will be held in better and not wasted. Next, a polythene membrane is laid on top of the insulation to make the floor watertight so none of the product can get through, and to protect the floor from the damp. Then, the underfloor heating pipes are installed and then the pressure is tested by a plumber to make sure they hold pressure and have no leaks. Finally, the liquid screed is laid.
It reduces material usage since it can be installed at as thin as 20mm on a bonded floor. It also saves on heating costs and is more space efficient since it removes the use of radiators due to the floor being able to be heated.
No maintenance is required. However, it is important to consider not dropping extremely heavy items on the floor.
